Founded in 1953, Narcotics Anonymous is a recovery program based on the principles, tools and traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. Among these principles and tools are the 12 steps and the 12 traditions. As of 2015, more than 63,000 weekly NA meetings are held in 132 countries around the world. Membership is free, and "sharing" at meetings is voluntary and anonymous. NA is not affiliated with any religion, psychiatric association, law enforcement group or government, according to Narcotics Anonymous.
