Lower back pain can be treated with medications such as acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, opiate pain relievers and antidepressants, according to WebMD. In addition, evidence suggests that steroid injections, anticonvulsants and Botox injections may also provide relief for lower back pain.
Acetaminophen and NSAIDs are available over the counter, though prescription versions of some NSAIDs are also available. Muscle relaxants are often prescribed when lower back pain symptoms coincide with back spasms, as WebMD explains. Opiate pain relievers are prescribed on a short-term basis for severe back pain that doesn't respond to other medications. Steroid injections may provide relief for leg pain connected to lower back pain.
