To eliminate human scabies mites, the infested first bathe with soap and water, then apply a topical pesticide such as lindane from the neck down for eight to 12 hours, states the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture. Next, they shower to clear their skin of the pesticide.
Scabies mites spread through skin-to-skin contact, and an infestation takes about a month for the symptoms to show. It is highly likely that other members of the same household as the infected person have the infestation, explains the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture. Thus, the entire household needs to go through the treatment regime to prevent reinfection after treatment. In addition, a repeat treatment a month later for everyone ensures the total elimination of the scabies mites.
