Self-medicate an earache by propping your head up during sleep, yawning frequently, taking decongestants and drinking plenty of water, CNN advises. Propping up the head helps to drain the Eustachian tubes in the ear and relieve pain.
Reduce the pain of an earache by placing heat or ice by or over the affected ear, says CNN. For heat, wet a washcloth with warm water and place it over the ear or activate a heating pad and place it by the ear. After heating the painful area, cool the ear with a bag of ice for up to 20 minutes. Some over-the-counter pain relievers can relieve the pain.
Sometimes, earaches are a result of blocked Eustachian tubes and need to be opened up and drained, according to CNN. Sleeping with the head propped up, frequent yawning and chewing gum help to open the tubes and relieve pressure and pain on the ears. Decongestants also help to relieve ear pain, especially if the ache is a result of a cold or illness.
Before self-medicating an earache, catalog the symptoms to determine whether to seek medical care, CNN explains. An earache in conjunction with fever, nausea and drowsiness or after a blow to the head may require emergency care.
