Pregnant women should not consume sushi because it is considered unsafe for their condition, according to Mayo Clinic. Uncooked seafood may contain bacteria and viruses harmful to pregnant women. All fish should be cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit, notes the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Pregnant women must also ensure they do not eat too much fish because of the risk of mercury poisoning. Some low-risk fish pregnant women can enjoy include tilapia, cod, catfish and pollock, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. For those types of fish that are low in mercury, pregnant women can eat up to 12 ounces per week.
