To alleviate symptoms of gastritis, avoid sugar and other refined foods, including white breads and pastas, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Also avoid alcohol, coffee and carbonated drinks, as these beverages can cause irritation of the stomach lining or increase acid production.

Doctors usually advise patients with gastritis to stop smoking, drinking alcohol and taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and change their eating plan to relieve symptoms, states the University of Maryland Medical Center. Avoid fatty foods, as studies suggest these foods can aggravate stomach lining inflammation.

It is essential for individuals with gastritis to maintain a high-fiber diet that includes plenty of flavonoid-rich foods, such as apples, celery and cranberries, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. Flavonoids can help control the growth of Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori, which is the common cause of gastritis. Dark, leafy vegetables, whole grains, beans, almonds and other foods containing calcium and B vitamins are also recommended. Lean meats, tofu and cold water fish are good sources of protein.

People with gastritis should drink six to eight glasses of clean water every day and regularly exercise for 30 minutes or more, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. It also helps to take a multivitamin, a probiotic supplement or a fish oil supplement to improve digestive health.
