It is extremely rare to die from tonsillitis, according to the American Academy Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. This stems from the quality of medical and surgical interventions available today.

Tonsillitis refers to the inflammation of the tonsils, which are the two oval-shaped glands in the back of the throat. Either a virus or a bacterial infection, according to the Mayo Clinic, can cause this inflammation. The most common symptoms of tonsillitis include fever, sore throat, swollen tonsils and difficulty swallowing. Chronic cases of tonsillitis may cause disrupted breathing patterns while asleep or awake. It may also cause an infection to spread to the tissues that surround the tonsils. Although tonsillitis is common, medical attention should be sought immediately if the patient develops trouble breathing and extreme difficulty when swallowing.
