Heel pain can occur for a number of reasons, and effective treatments for the pain include adequate rest, regular foot muscle stretching, pain relievers and comfortable shoes, according to WebMD. More elaborate treatments are also available depending on the cause of the pain, but are rarely used.

Typically, heel pain tends to derive from two places, either under the heel or behind the heel, explains the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society. The most common cause of heel pain is known as plantar fasciitis, which carries the symptoms of irritation and inflammation. Heel spurs have a chance of developing soon after, making it necessary to begin treatment as soon as the pain begins to develop.

One of the most important methods of easing stress on the muscles and tissues is to give the pained area some relief, according to WebMD. However, that doesn't mean a person should completely leave the foot cold and motionless. Small, simple stretching exercises can help. Flexing and pointing the toes and rotating the feet in place can make a big difference in the stiffness of the affected area. In addition, wearing special shoes with good arch support and a cushioned sole can contribute to gradually easing pain while performing daily tasks.

Resting reduces inflammation and eliminates pain. Applying ice packs on the affected area can also reduce the symptoms. Anti-inflammatory drugs can also be used to control the pain and decrease swelling. These medicines can be bought over-the-counter, according to
