To alleviate knee pain, cease high-impact activities, and rest the area as much as possible. Ice also helps reduce swelling in the knee. Apply ice for about 20 minutes at a time. Compress the area when not icing by applying an Ace bandage, making the bandage snug but not too tight to cut off circulation. This also helps reduce the swelling. Keep a sore knee elevated above heart level as much as possible. Over-the-counter medicines often offer relief from pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Advil and Aleve, are both good choices, says WebMD.
Changing the diet to lose weight is helpful for those who are overweight and experiencing chronic knee pain. Higher body weight puts more stress on the knees and can further exacerbate current knee problems, says Healthline. Additionally, patients with weak and inflexible leg muscles are often more at risk for knee pain, reports Mayo Clinic.
