Carotid stenosis, also known as carotid artery disease, is the narrowing of carotid arteries that results from accumulation of cholesterol and fatty deposits, notes WebMD.
Getting regular exercise aids in increasing the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, lowering high blood pressure, reducing stress, maintaining a healthy weight and controlling diabetes, explains Mayo Clinic. Excess weight may predispose a person to risk factors, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Fruits and vegetables are enriched with antioxidants, potassium and folate, which aid in reducing risks of stroke and transient ischemic attack, or TIA. Reducing consumption of saturated fats, cutting back on salt and managing chronic conditions, including hypertension, may also help in reducing chances of developing carotid stenosis.
Risk factors for carotid stenosis include smoking, obesity, insulin resistance and hypertension, states WebMD. A sedentary lifestyle and high cholesterol may also render a person vulnerable to the problem. Treatment includes taking medications such as aspirin to prevent blood clots, carotid endarterectomy, and carotid angioplasty and stenting, which involve using an inflated balloon and a small wire mesh coil to prevent arteries from narrowing, according to Mayo Clinic.
