Marketed as a natural dietary supplement used to relieve pain caused by arthritis, osteoporosis, bone cancer, muscle pain and other conditions, Reumofan Plus was manufactured in Mexico and commonly sold in flea markets and online. A laboratory analysis by the FDA found that the product contained diclofenac sodium, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that may cause serious gastrointestinal symptoms, such as ulceration and perforation of the stomach or intestines, as well as in increased risk of heart attack and stroke. The Mexican Ministry of Health also found that it contained corticosteroid dexamethasone, an immune system suppressant. Neither ingredient was declared on the product's label, according to the FDA.
An investigation by USA Today attempted to track down Riger Natural, the company that manufactures Reumofan Plus, soon discovering that the addresses listed as laboratory location by the company did not exist. Mexican Health authorities were also unable to locate the business, according to USA Today. Mexico's federal commission for the protection against sanitary risk issued its first public warning against the product in 2012.Learn more about Medications & Vitamins
