Migraine sufferers who used a specific blend of butterbur over a 16-week period experienced a reduction in both the number of migraine occurrences and the length of a migraine, states WebMD. Doses of at least 75 milligrams twice a day seemed to provide the best effect. There is also evidence to suggest that butterbur can reduce migraine occurrences in children ages 6 to 17. The specific extract used in these studies underwent synthesization to remove all liver-damaging chemicals, and researchers standardized its main ingredients, petasin and isopetasin, to 15 percent.
