BikeRadar explains that even the leanest riders have over 30,000 calories of fat stored, and many riders have over 100,000 calories of fat stored.
Diet plays an important role in how much fat is burned during a ride. Eating a meal filled with carbohydrates between 30 and 90 minutes before a ride causes the body to burn more carbohydrates than fat. BikeRadar recommends riding before breakfast to encourage the body to burn more fat. For rides lasting over two hours, BikeRadar recommends eating light carbohydrate meals during the ride. These meals should be between 40 and 60 grams of carbohydrates per hour of riding.
