For every pound you weigh, eat approximately 1 ½ grams of protein. This is a departure from the usual 1 gram of protein per pound when cutting or maintaining a weight. To bulk up, focus on getting more protein from sources such as chicken, turkey, egg whites and some fish, including tilapia and salmon.
Consume between 1 ½ and 2 grams of carbohydrates for every pound of your current body weight. Increased carbohydrate consumption is a key part of ensuring that the mass you add to your body is composed of both muscle and fat, rather than fat alone. Some good sources of carbohydrates include brown rice, pasta and broccoli.
Eat a limited but significant number of healthy fats. These fats are needed to maintain your body's hormones and muscle production. Some sources of good fats include flax seed and fish oil.
