What Is Bromelain Used For?

Bromelain is an enzyme mixture found in pineapples that is able to digest protein and is often used to treat indigestion, reduce inflammation from infections and injuries, and remove dead skin from burns. Medical researchers are divided in opinion as of 2016 about whether Bromelain consumption is an effective treatment.

Other supposed uses for Bromelain include treatment for sore muscles after workouts, stimulation of muscle contractions, prevention of water collection in the lungs and even prevention of some forms of cancer. The enzyme was first extracted and isolated from the pineapple stem by scientists in the late 1800s, but its medicinal usage was widespread in Latin America and South America before that time.
