Glucose is the body's source of energy, states the Better Health Channel. The body breaks down and absorbs glucose from the carbohydrates in food. A person's glycogen storage is typically low in the morning, as he has gone without food for as long as 12 hours. Glycogen is the glucose stored in the muscle tissue and liver and is gradually released all night to maintain stable blood sugar levels. The body starts to break down fatty acids to generate the energy it needs, once the energy from the glycogen storage gets depleted. This leads to lower energy levels, as fatty acids are only partially oxidized. Eating breakfast replenishes glycogen storage, boosts energy levels and improves metabolism for the day.
The Better Health Channel explains that breakfast provides the opportunity to consume foods rich in nutrients. People who skip breakfast lack fiber, vitamins and minerals, such as iron, calcium, zinc and vitamin B2.
