As of 2015, there are no contact lenses that tint in the sunlight currently available to the public. There are various tinted contact lenses on the market that block ultraviolet light or enhance vision, such as those offered by Orion Vision, but they are not photochromic, explains Orion Vision Group.
A research company in Singapore developed a way to embed a photoreactive polymer used in transition lenses directly into contact lenses in 2009, according to MIT Technology Review. Prior to this, researchers struggled to find a way to coat a contact lens in the photochromic polymer. Embedding the polymer within the lens allows for an even distribution. Plans are underway to test the new technology on animals, but there is no expected release date to the public.
