Black cohosh is a modestly effective herbal remedy for reducing menopausal symptoms such as excessive sweating, irritability and occurrences of hot flashes, according to WebMD. As of 2015, the research results are for Remifemin, a commercial black cohosh product and they may not apply to other black cohosh products.
Breast cancer patients who are considering taking black cohosh for cancer treatment-related hot flashes should consult their oncologist or health care professional. Research reveals black cohosh does not reduce hot flashes in such patients and it may present a health risk for them, notes WebMD. Seventy-five percent of the studies conducted with women in menopause show that black cohosh has no affect on levels of either luteinizing or follicle-stimulating hormones, according to the National Institutes of Health.
