Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogen that increases fat burning and athletic performance and lowers cortisol production, explains Dr. Axe, a doctor of natural medicine and a clinical nutritionist. Rhodiola is one of the most effective adaptogens, plants that assist the body in adapting to physical, chemical and environmental stress.Continue Reading
Rhodiola contains rosavin, a chemical compound that triggers the body's fat burning response by stimulating the production of hormone-sensitive lipase, an enzyme that breaks down belly fat, explains Dr. Axe. A clinical study showed that overweight individuals that took Rhodiola daily lost eleven pounds more over the same time period with the same low-calorie diet than overweight individuals who did not take Rhodiola. Exercise enhances Rhodiola's fat burning effects. Rhodiola also increases the body's production of erthropoetin, which leads to increased red blood cell count and thereby improves stamina and reduces fatigue, notes Dr. Axe.
In 2004, researchers discovered that Rhodiola reduces inflammation and the recovery of muscles, advises Dr. Axe. In another study, researchers found that administering Rhodiola to rats increased their endurance, enabling the animals to swim 25 percent longer.
Rhodiola also reduces the bodies production of cortisol, a hormone that triggers the body's "fight or flight" response. High levels of cortisol over an extended period of time lower the body's blood glucose response and cause thyroid dysfunction, all of which can lead to obesity.Learn more about Vitamins & Supplements
