The benefits of using jiaogulan may include reduced cholesterol levels, lowered blood pressure and improved heart function, states WebMD. Other possible benefits of using jiaogulan are a strengthened immune system and improved memory.
Jiaogulan is an herb used to treat high cholesterol and blood pressure as well as improve heart function, according to WebMD. The plant originates in China, where it grows wild in the south central area of the country, and its leaves are used to make medicine. It is sometimes referred to as "Southern Ginseng" because of its similarities to the herb in the way it is used.
Although jiaogulan seems to have always been used by people in the Guizhou province, it did not become incorporated into mainstream traditional Chinese medicine until late in the 20th century, says Drugs.com. Evidence suggests jiaogulan contains substances that help reduce cholesterol levels. For a person with high cholesterol, taking the herb not only decreases her total cholesterol amount, but also boosts the percentage of high-density lipoprotein, or "good" cholesterol, in her total cholesterol ratio. Jiaogulan has been shown to have cardiovascular effects, notes Drugs.com. It is also effective in regulating blood pressure and increasing stamina.
While taking jiaogulan strengthens the immune system, it also decreases the efficacy of medications that weaken the immune system, according to WebMD. Jiaogulan may slow blood clotting as well, so taking it along with medicines that also slow blood clotting may result in increased bruising or bleeding.
