A Tommie Copper back brace is part of a lineup of copper-infused compression clothing claimed to aid in muscle recovery and relief of discomfort. In the past, the company had claimed additional benefits. The back brace is targeted at relieving lower back pain, according to Tommie Copper.
As of March, 2015, Tommie Copper's website describes the Men's Comfort Back Brace as offering an integrated foam interior lined with the company's copper-and-zinc-infused Znergy fabric for comfort and support. Compression supplies additional support and aids in muscle recovery, according to Tommie Copper. As an additional benefit, an adjustable overlapping velcro strap enables custom fit.
In a FAQ on the site, Tommie Copper maintained that the copper-and-zinc-infused Znergy eliminates odors caused by microbes on the fabric and offers UPF 50+ skin protection from the sun's ultraviolet rays.
In an article published in October 2013, however, Truth in Advertising criticized Tommie Copper's practices of running infomercials and posting blurbs on social media suggesting copper infusion provided other health benefits. According to Truth in Advertising, in a post on Twitter, a company spokesperson tweeted that the copper-infused material helped with pain and inflammation. Truth in Advertising found no evidence that copper can help to relieve aches, pains or arthritis symptoms.
The HighYa.com website also debunked these and additional health claims for zinc infusion. However, in analyzing reviews from 160 Tommie Copper users, HighYa.com found that about 50 percent of users said they had experienced pain relief from the compression products, mostly for conditions such as arthritis, inflammation and carpal tunnel syndrome.
