WebMD.com states the main benefit of statin drugs is their effectiveness in lowering low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol. However, WebMD and Harvard Health report that studies are showing other benefits as well, such as a decreased risk of heart attack and stroke.
Cleveland Clinic states that statin drugs can improve the productivity of the lining of the blood vessels and stabilize the atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries. They can also reduce the inflammation of cells and damage to those cells due to oxidation. Finally, statin drugs can reduce the risk for blood clots by assisting in prohibiting blood platelets from clumping together.
