Astaxanthin, the active ingredient in BioAstin, is used to treat a variety of conditions including degenerative brain disease, high cholesterol and eye problems, according to WebMD. There are no known side effects, but there is insufficient research to recommend use by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Studies have shown astaxanthin’s potential benefits for treating brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; eye conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration; and for promoting overall skin health and moisture, reports WebMD. Other common usages, such as treating muscle soreness and carpal tunnel syndrome, have shown no evidence of efficacy in trials.
Astaxanthin is likely safe at levels found naturally in food and possibly safe when taken as an oral supplement, notes WebMD. It has been shown to be used safely as a supplement in 4 to 40 milligrams daily dosages for up to 12 weeks.
