S-adenosylmethionine, abbreviated SAMe, is a dietary supplement that has been investigated in the treatment of numerous disorders, including depression, osteoarthritis and liver disease, reports Drugs.com. Researchers have found SAMe to be superior to placebo in the treatment of depression in humans, with comparable efficacy to tricyclic antidepressants.
SAMe shows promise in the treatment of liver disease, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. A study in patients with alcohol-related liver cirrhosis found that a two-year SAMe dosage regimen improved survival rates and delayed the need for liver transplants. Positive effects have also been shown in mice with liver damage. SAMe reduces pain and inflammation in people with osteoarthritis, and it can be as effective as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen. The drug is possibly effective in treating fibromyalgia, although results are mixed, according to WebMD.
