In a double-blind, 8-week study, Radical Defense SPF improved skin tone, decreased fine lines and wrinkles, and increased radiance, as reported by PRIORI. The study was conducted by PRIORI and examined the effects of several skin care products.
The skin care products included in the Radical Defense study included a cleanser, eye serum, Even Tones treatment, moisturizing cream and sunscreen. These products contain idebenone complex, which is an ingredient similar to coenzyme Q10, according to PRIORI. The manufacturer claims that idebenone removes free radicals released by the mitochondria during the production of energy within human cells. As a result, the Radical Defense products protect against future damage while improving skin tone, increasing firmness, and reducing fine lines and wrinkles, as stated in PRIORI's skin care study.
Idebenone has been shown in clinical trials to improve the condition of photodamaged skin, as reported by the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in an abstract for the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Participants in this study exhibited smoother skin, reduced fine lines and wrinkles, and increased skin hydration. In addition, the researchers examined skin biopsies and found a reduction in antibodies and an increase in collagen present in the skin. PRIORI skin care products contain idebenone in concentrations of 0.5 percent. Concentrations or 1 percent, used in the published study, are available by prescription.
