Lysine, an essential amino acid, may be taken orally or topically to treat cold sores, advises WebMD. Doses higher than 3 grams a day may be used for breakouts, notes Drugs.com. Much higher doses are probably safe, according to a study in which patients suffering from Parkinson's disease experienced no negative effects from consuming 100 grams of lysine daily per kilogram of body weight. However, individuals with high lysine levels in the blood or who have impaired liver and kidney function should not take the supplement. Lysine may cause temporary side effects such as diarrhea, stomach cramps and nausea.
Lysine also may be helpful in treating osteoporosis, anxiety, angina and migraine headaches, but more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness for these conditions, advises Drugs.com. Lysine is possibly effective in treating osteoporosis because it increases the absorption of calcium. Other benefits of lysine may include increased muscle mass, lowered glucose, and relief from heroin withdrawal symptoms.Learn more about Vitamins & Supplements
