Enemas are touted for their weight loss effects; however, the benefits of enemas have not been medically proven, says Everyday Health. While enemas may help relieve constipation and diarrhea, over-reliance on enemas to alleviate indigestion can have dangerous results.
Adverse effects of enemas include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, warns Everyday Health. Frequent enema use also runs the risk of perforating the rectum, which can damage the digestive organs in addition to interfering with the body's natural absorption of nutrients and fluids. Before using enemas to treat digestive problems, consult with a doctor because there are many alternatives to enemas, including adding more fiber to the diet, drinking more fluids and exercising regularly.
