According to WebMD, the main benefit of using the DMAE supplement, in conjunction with taking ginseng and vitamins, is improving exercise performance. Possible uses, although insufficient evidence exists to prove its efficacy, include the treatment of ADHD, increasing memory and brain power, treating autism, improving red blood cell function and improving intelligence.
Dimethylaminoethanol, which is abbreviated as DMAE and also called Deanol, is a chemical associated with a reaction in the brain that produces acetylcholine. Acetylcholine helps nerve cells function in transmittal of signals in the brain and in the nervous system, notes BrainPower.org. Riker Laboratories once sold Deanol under the name Deaner, explains WebMD.
BrainPower.org notes that studies have been conducted to determine the role DMAE and choline play in optimizing memory and brain activity. The DMAE supplement has also been used in skincare products to treat sagging skin.
Although the DMAE supplement is considered safe for most people, WebMD specifies that pregnant or breastfeeding women and those with schizophrenia or depression should take precaution and avoid its usage. Some medications such as anticholinergic drugs and antidepressants, AChE inhibitors and cholinergic drugs interact with the DMAE supplement. Deanol's side effects include constipation and headache and more serious symptoms such as increased blood pressure and depression.
