Studies suggest that vitamin E can help prevent heart disease, kidney damage and eye damage, which are common health problems in diabetics, states Joslin Diabetes Center. However, doctors recommend that patients not take more than 200 international units of vitamin E daily. The suggested daily intake of the vitamin is 30 international units each day.
Chromium can potentially decrease body fat, create muscle, and normalize blood glucose and lipid levels, but it is difficult to determine the recommended daily intake of chromium because it is a trace vitamin, as Joslin Diabetes Center indicates. Because chromium is a relatively safe supplement, physicians usually suggest that diabetics take it, particularly Type 2 diabetics, and the recommended daily dosage is 50 to 200 micrograms. It is essential to consult with a doctor before taking any supplement to learn the suggested dosage.
