Basic nutrition is made up primarily of the basic food groups, or foods that share the same nutritional properties. Veggies, fruits, grains, dairy, and protein all make up the primary food groups. The amount of food required from each group is dependent on age, sex, and level of physical activity. A person who leads a mostly sedentary life should not have a diet of mostly grains, for example. Proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats all come from the primary food groups.
Water is required to keep the body hydrated and is used in every bodily function. It helps regulate temperature, lubricate joints, protect tissues and clean out the body through urine and perspiration. According to the CDC, drinks that have a lot of sugar--sports drinks, juices, and soft drinks--should not replace a person's daily intake of water as they have a lot of empty calories.
Vitamins and minerals are essential for growth and development, especially at early ages. People can usually get all the required vitamins and minerals from the foods they eat, but there are countless tablets on the market that can supplement those who have vitamin or minerals deficiencies. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can lead to diseases like rickets, anemia, and high blood pressure, according to the CDC.Learn more about Nutritional Amounts & Limits
