Sinusitis is a condition in which the mucous membranes of the nose, sinuses and throat become inflamed. This obstructs the sinus openings and prevents normal drainage of mucous, causing buildup and pressure, according to Balloon Sinusplasty.
Sinusplasty treats recurring acute or chronic sinusitis by the insertion of a guidewire through the nose and into the affected sinus. An attached balloon catheter is inflated inside the sinus, widening the outflow tract of the sinus by fracturing bone and pushing back the mucous membrane, notes the American Rhinologic Society.Learn more about Conditions & Diseases
