It is bad to go to bed on a full stomach, but it is also detrimental to go to bed on an empty stomach. Researchers recommend avoiding bedtime snacks and waiting for two hours after dinner before going to bed.
An empty stomach can keep one alert and awake during the night. When lacking nutrients, the body will begin to break muscle down into energy. If one must eat close to bedtime, it is best to stick to fruits and vegetables.
Eating heavy carbohydrates, proteins and saturated fats before bed will slow digestion, cause bloating and gas, and potentially lead to weight gain. Ideally after eating dinner one should relax for an hour or two by reading, watching TV, showering or doing simple chores in order to allow the body to digest dinner before going to sleep.
