An empty stomach can keep one alert and awake during the night. When lacking nutrients, the body will begin to break muscle down into energy. If one must eat close to bedtime, it is best to stick to fruits and vegetables.
Eating heavy carbohydrates, proteins and saturated fats before bed will slow digestion, cause bloating and gas, and potentially lead to weight gain.
