The average cost for a hysterectomy in 2014 is between $7,500 and $12,000, explains Ethicon. The cost varies significantly due to a number of factors, including location, the manner of surgery, the type of insurance, the choice of hospital and the insurance co-pay.
The type of hysterectomy contributes to varying costs, as well, states Ethicon. A total hysterectomy is more expensive than a partial hysterectomy or one that includes removal of an ovary or fallopian tube.
The means of entry also affects cost, reports Ethicon. Vaginal hysterectomies are the least expensive and typically least invasive, followed by outpatient laparoscopies. Less invasive procedures reduce costs primarily because they require little or no time in the hospital and less professional care afterward.
