Stenting is a treatment for artery blockage that is generally considered low-risk, according to Medtronic. Stenting does not require major surgery or general anesthesia, and recovery times from the procedure are usually quick.
As with angioplasty, risks associated with stenting include infection or heavy bleeding of the catheter insertion site, says Medtronic. Stroke and heart attack are also possibilities, although these occur with greater frequency in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.
Stenting also carries the risk of restenosis, which can require further medical procedures, notes Medtronic. Stent thrombosis, in which the blood clots following implantation of the stent, is also a potential complication.
