Anavar, also known as the brand names Oxandrin and Oxandrolone, is an anabolic steroid usually taken by mouth two or four times per day, according to WebMD. This low-dose steroid is prescribed by doctors for patients with severe weight loss due to trauma, surgery or chronic infection.
Doctors may tell patients to take the steroid for two for four weeks. MedlinePlus explains if the patient continues to lose weight, a longer time period may be prescribed. Side effects may include constipation, nervousness, difficulty falling asleep, changes in sex drive and depression. Anavar is also for patients who have lost weight for unknown reasons.
