DrugLib.com explains that Amoclan is a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin is a form of ampicillin, which comes from the penicillin-based 6-aminopenicillanic acid. Clavulanate originates from fermented Streptomyces clavuligerus, and it is responsible for blocking certain enzymes. This form of Amoclan is taken orally, and the antibiotic is used for treating such diseases as pneumonia. Wikipedia notes that the combination drug also treats other bacteria that is responsible for urinary tract, sinus and respiratory infections. It also eliminates bacteria from animal bites.
Wikipedia further adds that Amoclan cures periodontitis and kennel cough in dogs. Amoclan also deals with skin and urinary tract infections in cats. It destroys bacteria that causes metritis, respiratory infections and mastitis in cattle. Amoclan is an effective deterrent against agalactia and respiratory infections in pigs.
WebMD further notes that Amoclan is only effective for treating bacterial growth and not viral infections in the form of the cold or flu. Repeated use of the drug lowers its potency; however, it is most effective when the medicine is kept at a consistent level in the body. Bacterial growth continues to grow if a person stops taking the drug prematurely.Learn more about Medications & Vitamins
