When it affects the scalp and hair, it is known as lichen planopilaris, and it can cause patchy hair loss. If the skin condition affects the scalp, physicians usually prescribe oral steroids, topical steroids, Accutane or hydroxychloroquine. Antihistamines are also prescribed to help treat itching, another common symptom of lichen planus.
