Is Aleve a Muscle Relaxer?

Aleve is an anti-inflammatory medication used to reduce inflammation throughout the body, and it is not intended to work as a muscle relaxer. This medication is used to provide temporary relief from pain caused by headaches, menstrual cramps, arthritis, gout attacks, joint stiffness, dental pain and other types of pain.

Aleve is considered to be a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and is available over the counter. Common muscle relaxers are available by prescription only, and include medications such as carisoprodol, methocarbamol, diazepam and cyclobenzaprine. Muscle relaxers can be used with over the counter pain relievers. Since muscle relaxers can become addictive, it's important to take them exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
