Alcachofa, or artichoke extract, contains chemicals that reduce nausea, vomiting and gas, according to WebMD. The chemical cynarin, which is in artichoke extract, has been used successfully to stimulate the liver and gallbladder and to lower cholesterol, states New York University's Langone Medical Center.
Germany's commission E has determined that alcachofa is effective against dyspepsia, a general term covering a range of digestive discomfort, says NYU Langone. But according to an National Institutes of Health study published on PubMed, alcachofa is not effective in lessening the severity of a hangover, one of its many suggested uses. It also has been used to treat a wide range of other conditions, from anemia to snake bite, for which its effectiveness has yet to be studied, says WebMD.
