Ibuprofen, which is sold under brand names Motrin, Ibuprin and Advil, is not available over the counter in doses larger than 200 milligrams as of 2015, according to EverydayHealth. Higher doses of ibuprofen require a prescription for purchase.
Ibuprofen is available in 400-, 600- and 800-milligram doses with a prescription, notes EverydayHealth. The typical dose of ibuprofen is one to two capsules or tablets every four to six hours as needed for pain. It is not recommended to exceed 2,400 milligrams per day. Prescription-strength ibuprofen, which is generally prescribed for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, should not be taken in excess of 3,200 milligrams daily.
