John Cornyn served as the senior U.S. senator from Texas and Ted Cruz was the state's junior senator in 2014. Both men were elected as Republicans.
John Cornyn was first elected to the senate in 2002 and was at the end of his second term in 2014. He won re-election for his third term in November 2014. A resident of San Antonio, Cornyn has served on the Senate Finance and Judiciary Committees. Before election to the senate, he held positions as a district judge, a Texas Supreme Court justice and the state attorney general.
Before Ted Cruz won election to the senate in 2012, he had never been elected to public office. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, he was the first Hispanic to serve as Solicitor General of Texas.
