Alexander A. Vandegrift was the first four-star general promoted to that rank while on active duty, serving as Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1944 to 1947. Vandegrift was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1942.
James N. Mattis was Supreme Allied Commander Transformation and Commander of the U.S. Joint Forces Command from 2007 to 2009; Commander, U.S. Joint Forces Command from 2009 to 2010; and Commander, U.S. Central Command from 2010 to 2013.
Peter Pace served as Commander in Chief, U.S. Southern Command from 2000 to 2001; Vice Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2001 to 2005; and Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2005 to 2007.Learn more about Military
