Lawton Chiles served three terms in the U.S. Senate from 1971 to 1989, after serving 12 years in the Florida legislature. Upon retiring from the Senate, he served two terms as Florida’s governor. He suffered a fatal heart attack three weeks before the end of his second term in December 1998, after spending 40 years in public service.
Paula Hawkins became the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate from Florida in 1980. As of 2015, she is the only woman from Florida to hold this office.Learn more about Branches of Government
