Inmates in federal prisons may be located for free on the Federal Bureau of Prison's website. As of 2015, users can visit Bop.gov and search under the Inmates heading. State prisons often have similar inmate locator websites, depending on the state, and are also free.
To find a federal inmate, the site user must know either the inmate's federal inmate registration number or his full name, age, race and sex. Without complete information, the website can only provide a list of possible inmate matches based on the information provided. Bop.gov can provide information on the facility in which the prisoner is incarcerated, how to call or email them and how to send mail, a package or money. It is also possible to learn about regulations when visiting, custody and child care, and how to voice a concern about the inmate. It also provides their release date.
Inmate information is available only for inmates incarcerated after 1982. A map provides locations of federal prison facilities.
