It is possible to view real-time maps of wildfires with a technology called Geospacial Multi-Agency Coordination, or GeoMAC, which is provided through the Geomac.gov website. This web application gives users the ability to zoom in on satellite images of the Earth and view the perimeter boundaries of wildfires in real-time.
The GeoMAC map data is derived from a combination of sources, including human observation, GPS data and satellite imagery. Originally designed to allow fire managers to view perimeter data and coordinate fire fighting efforts, this technology is now available to public and private websites. The application allows users to gain various types of information, such as the names of current fires and the number of acres currently affected by each fire.
