Born in Scranton, Pa. on November 20, 1942, Biden graduated from the University of Delaware and from Syracuse Law School. He was elected to the U.S. Senate from Delaware at 29 years of age and served in the Senate for 36 years, 17 of them as the Chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Presidential nominee Barack Obama chose Biden to be his running mate in the presidential election of 2008. The pair won the election and went on to win a second term in 2012.
