A U.S. Marine Corps combat engineer is a marine who is responsible for supporting ground forces in a number of ways. Marine Corps combat engineers specialize in clearing obstacles, building structures such as bunkers and roads and performing repair and demolition tasks.
After basic training, a marine enrolled in the engineering occupational field is required to complete a specialty course that is dependant on his military occupation specialty. Some of these courses are the Basic Metal Workers course, the Engineer Equipment Operator course and the Basic Combat Engineer course. After completing the required training, new engineering marines are assigned to either a Marine wing support squadron, a combat engineer battalion or an engineer support battalion.
