Eligible individuals can apply for food stamps by filling out a Louisiana Combined Application Project Enrollment Form1A or calling 1-888-HELP-U for more assistance. LA CAFE provides food stamps to low-income individuals in the state of Louisiana through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
SNAP is designed to provide assistance to low-income families by covering a portion of the household's food expenditures. Eligibility is based on total household income in proportion to the number of household occupants. Additionally, applicants must be able to show proof of identity, Louisiana residency and U.S. citizenship. Each household member must have a valid Social Security number in order to be eligible. Able-bodied adults of working age must be employed.
To apply, residents can fill out an online application on the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services website, or they can print an application and mail it to a local Department of Children and Family Services parish office. Residents should gather required documents such as a driver's license, birth certificate, Social Security card, recent pay stubs, income tax returns and all expense reports in order to verify the application. When DCFS receives the application, an employee contacts the applicant in order to schedule a follow-up interview, which is held either in person or over the telephone. Those who are determined eligible for assistance are issued a Louisiana Purchase Card in order to access their Electronic Benefit Transfer account.
