Area code 213 was placed into service on Feb. 4, 1994, when prefix (213) 225- was introduced. It was split on June 13, 1998, to include area code 323. Area code 213 also services Gardena and Burbank.

Area code 212 was put into service on Jan. 1, 1947. In 1984 it was split to form area code 718 and was overlaid with area code 917 in 1992. It was overlaid again in 1999 with area code 646. The primary area covered by area code 212 is Manhattan.

Area code 312 was originally introduced in 1947 and serves the downtown Chicago area, or inside “The Loop.” In 1996 it was split to form area code 773 to serve the remainder of Chicago. In 2009 area code 872 was placed into service and is an overlay of area codes 312 and 773.

Area code 404 was placed into service on Feb. 4, 1994, when prefix (404) 201- was placed into service. On Aug. 8, 1995, area code 770 was created as an overlay to 404. Both area codes serve the same area. Area code 404 also covers College Park, Tucker and East Point.
