In addition to its 29 adult male correctional centers, as of 2015, the Illinois Department of Corrections operates seven adult transitional centers, two boot camps, four reception and classification centers, four women's facilities, and eight work camps. These facilities make up the entire adult state prison system in Illinois.
The Illinois Department of Corrections incarcerates felons sentenced to state prison by a court of law. The department classifies its facilities according to eight levels of security. The state's four maximum security units have the highest level of security. Eight adult transitional centers have the lowest level of security and allow community-based work release for inmates at the end of their sentences.
